What is Scratch Resistant Acrylic/Polycarbonate?

Acrylic and Polycarbonate are two materials that are hugely popular alternatives for glass. They can be used in many applications due to their diverse features and varied characteristics. Scratch-resistant acrylic/polycarbonate is a great alternative to standard materials when you are using it in areas where you want to avoid scratches and need to maintain appearance.

What does Scratch Resistant mean?

Scratch resistance means being able to resist types of damages such as scratches and scuffs.

How does it work on Acrylic/Polycarbonate?

We offer a Clear Scratch Resistant Polycarbonate Sheet and Clear Scratch Resistant Perspex® Acrylic Sheet for that added extra layer of protection. Both Polycarbonate and Acrylic are strong materials that already have impact-resistant features. However, that is more for severe breakages rather than visual imperfections. By adding a clear hard coating onto the sheets, it acts as a protective layer that increases its durability.

Having the added layer does not take away any of the standard properties of the acrylic/polycarbonate but instead is an added feature. As the coating is clear, it also does not minimise the level of clarity or light transmission.

How should I clean the acrylic/polycarbonate sheet?

The sheets should be cleaned in the same way as standard acrylic and polycarbonate sheets – with soapy water only. Check out our blog on how to clean your acrylic panels for more details on retaining a flawless look.

When to use scratch resistant material?

This type of material is best used when the application is in harsher environments or in places where damages are more likely to occur. Some common applications can include:

  • Tabletop protectors
  • Picture frames
  • Protecting displays in schools and colleges
  • Secondary glazing
  • Covid protection screens
  • Wall panneling
  • Boat Windows
