Wall Panelling is an extremely popular interior design technique that can enhance the look of any room. It is a cost-effective solution that helps to modernise internal spaces whilst still giving the room character. Wall Panelling can be used in almost every room such as bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and even bathrooms with the correct material. It is commonly replacing traditional decorative methods like tiles and wallpaper as it is a simple DIY project that is quick and easy, with maximum impact.
MDF Wood Wall Panelling
You can create the perfect wall panel by simply using cut to size MDF strips. MDF is a cost effect material that is lightweight and can be easily machined without splintering, warping or cracking. It also has an incredibly smooth surface which makes it ideal to paint on.
What thickness of MDF should I use for wall panelling?
The thickness of MDF really depends on your personal preference. However, using anything less them 6mm thick may not create the texture you require and anything above 18mm might be too thick. At Cut Plastic Sheeting, we offer MDF sheets in a range of thickness between 3mm to 30mm all cut to your size.
Installing Decorative Wall Panels
Securing your wood panels to the walls is simple! Once you know what type of wall panel design you want on your walls and have your cut to size MDF material, it is time to prepare your wall. This is an important first step as it will help to put the panels up easier. If you have any holes in your walls they should be covered up and your walls should be sanded to create a smooth, flat surface.
Next, place your panels on the wall where you want them and make sure the panels are level by using a spirit level. When you are certain the panels are straight, use a pencil to mark out where you want the panels to go and do a final check to see they are level and evenly spaced apart. Once you are happy with the positioning of the panels you can then use your adhesive to glue it to the wall.
Painting MDF Wall Panels
Once your MDF has been glued to the wall, you want to firstly caulk around each panel and let it dry properly first. MDF can be painted on but it does absorb moisture easily so it is important that it is properly primed first or else it will absorb the paint and ruin the look of the material. Once you have properly primed your paint 2 or even 3 times, you can lightly sand the material on the top and sides using extra fine-grit sandpaper to give it a smooth surface ready for painting. Then, once you have chosen your perfect colour, you can paint on top of the panel using a roller to give it a smooth and neat finish.

So, if all you need is MDF, the cost then depends on the thickness and the number of panels you require.
