PLEXIGLAS® and Plexiglass are two words that are commonly used within the plastic industry and it can be difficult to understand the difference between the two. They are both pronounced the same and almost spelt identically but they actually mean two separate things. So we thought we would help answer the common question – what is the difference between PLEXIGLAS® and Plexiglass?
What is PLEXIGLAS®?
PLEXIGLAS® is a brand name the same as Perspex®, Lucite, Altuglas and Acrylite. All of which manufacture different types of plastic acrylic products. PLEXIGLAS® is one of the best-known acrylic brands in the world and has been around since 1933. The founder of PLEXIGLAS®, Röhm & Haas, produced the first cast sheet made of polymethyl methacrylate which was registered under the brand name PLEXIGLAS®.
Today, PLEXIGLAS® produces both cast and extruded material which is available in all different colours, textures and thicknesses.
What is Plexiglass?
Plexiglass refers to what people call Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Other popular synonyms include acrylic or acrylic glass, it is just a different way of saying the material. Because the brand name PLEXIGLAS is so commonly used in the industry, it has become part of the language and a general way to describe PMMA.
