An inexpensive way to brighten up the home, Splashbacks are now favoured over the more traditional tile surfaces we chose in the 1990’s, and most interior designers recommend these stylish wall coverings over anything else.
When it comes to colourful kitchen Splashbacks there are two materials you can choose from Glass or Plastic such as acrylic, and while they are both suited to the job there are differences between the two that one should consider:
Price
Acrylic Splashbacks are generally much cheaper than the glass alternatives, and therefore if you are on a tight budget Plastic or acrylic Splashbacks are probably your best option.
Colour Choices
Both Glass and Acrylic Splashbacks are available in a whole range of different colours so it is easy to find the right colour for your kitchen, no matter which material you choose.
Durability and Maintenance
Glass Splashbacks are generally made in toughened glass and are therefore relatively strong, but they can still crack if knocked by a saucepan. As with any glass surface Splashbacks are prone to collecting dust and fingerprints and so regular cleaning is required. Acrylic Splashbacks are extremely tough and virtually impact resistant so they are able to withstand the daily knocks and bumps that happen in every kitchen, although they can scratch. Cleaned with a simple warm water and soap solution, acrylic Splashbacks do not attract dust and therefore remain cleaner for longer.
Heat Resistance
Most acrylic Splashbacks are not suitable for use behind a direct heat source such as the rear of electric or gas hobs. Glass Splashbacks may be suitable for use behind a heat source if they are made of toughened glass and placed at an appropriate distance, however glass Splashbacks made of glass that has not been toughened may crack with the heat.
Weight and Mounting
Glass is a heavy material and therefore glass Splashbacks need strong adhesives or supports to keep them in place. Plastic or acrylic Splashbacks are exceptionally light in weight and are therefore easier to apply to most wall surfaces.
